Quick Tip of the Week – De-Stress your Day
It may seem next to impossible to find time to relieve stress at work, but a few well-spent minutes can dramatically increase your productivity, enjoyment and health. Take a few deep, soothing breaths. Take a short break, getting away from your work station, even for a walk to the water cooler, can help you collect your thoughts and refocus on the task at hand. Laugh! Read one of your favorite jokes or simply laugh aloud. Close your eyes for a few minutes and visualize yourself relaxing at your favorite vacation spot or completing the big presentation with ease.

Junior Spikers Beach Volleyball Camp
Simply the best youth volleyball program on the planet. Juniors learn skills and have fun at the same time. Groups will be formed based on age and/or ability level. Beginners will be introduced to the basics, while juniors with existing skills will be coached for further development. Camps begin in June and registration is currently in process. Ol’ Fishin’ Hole Derby
Volunteers are being sought for the Ol’ Fishin’ Hole Derby that will be held on Friday, May 8th at Chris Carr Park. The City of Huntington Beach Community Services Department and the Huntington Beach Kiwanis Club sponsor this event. We are expecting 180 children. Many of these children have never been fishing before, and it has proved to be a fun event for both the children and the volunteers. Kiwanis will provide lunch. We are asking that volunteers arrive at 8:30 a.m. and bring a net if they have one. Please call 536-5486 to sign-up to volunteer.
Enjoy the Day Touring, Shopping & Dining - Home Tour 2009
The Huntington Beach Art Center and the Huntington Beach Education Foundation invite you to spend a spectacular day touring, lunching, and shopping right here in the heart of the city on Saturday, May 9th from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The Home Tour 2009 offers a chance to visit some prestigious Huntington Beach homes; enjoy a gourmet buffet lunch provided by popular local restaurants; and a special Mother’s Day Boutique at the HB Art Center. Art: Cartooning Workshop for Children Ages 7 – 12
This one-day workshop will teach character drawing and basic cartooning. Enrollment is limited and pre-registration is required. The class will be held at the Huntington Beach Art Center at 538 Main Street. There are still two classes available: May 18 and June 8. Student Art Work on Display at the HB Art Center
The Huntington Beach Art Center’s exhibition of student artwork will continue through Sunday, May 10. The exhibit contains artwork from the seven high schools in the Huntington Beach Union School District; students from the Huntington Beach City School District; as well as students from all over Orange County participating in the county-wide arts festival “Imagination Celebration” organized by Arts Orange County. The Art Center galleries are open Wed. – Sat. from 12-6 pm. and Sunday from 12-4 pm. Don’t miss the final week of this stunning visual display of student artwork. Coming Soon: Sprouts Farmer’s Market
Huntington Beach will soon be welcoming Sprouts Farmer’s Market to the community. Sprouts will open its first location later this year at Towne House Plaza next door to the second location of Kohl’s scheduled to open in the fall. Sprouts Farmer’s Market is a specialty grocer with the mission of “helping America eat healthier, live longer, and spend less.” In addition to farm-fresh produce purchased from local growers when possible, they also offer a large selection of vitamins and supplements, all-natural meats, fresh seafood, bins full of bulk foods, an extensive selection of natural and organic grocery items, rBST-free milk, imported cheeses, deli meats, and an old-fashioned bakery.
Third HB Trader Joe’s to Open in June
Trader Joe’s has announced that their Huntington Harbor location – and the second to open since October 2008 – will be open for business in June. Trader Joe’s will occupy approximately 14,000 square feet in the space formerly occupied by Ralph’s on Algonquin Street in the Huntington Harbor Mall. This third location for the popular grocer joins the Five Points, and the Brookhurst and Hamilton location which opened last year.
The Finance Department recently conducted two seminars in cooperation with the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce on “How to Do Business with the City.” In a continuing effort to promote doing business locally, the Finance Department provided information on upcoming opportunities to do businesses with the City. The seminars also covered how to utilize the City websites and how to make proposals.
At 2:06PM, on April 27, the Huntington Beach Fire Department responded to a reported trench collapse at 4671 Warner Ave. at the Ocean Towers Luxury Apartments. One male victim was trapped in the trench when concrete and soil collapsed on him. Firefighters and others worked to rescue the victim until it was determined that he had died. Rescue efforts then turned to body recovery. Fire departments from Santa Ana, Costa Mesa, Orange County Fire Authority along with the Huntington Beach Police Department, Public Works, and the Building and Safety Department assisted with the rescue and recovery. The Orange County Coroner's Office was also at the scene.
Bike to Work Week – May 11-15, 2009
You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to bike to work. Bicycle commuting helps improve the “livability” of communities by reducing traffic noise and congestion Commuting by bicycle, saves money, provides a good workout, and cuts auto emissions. Sixty percent of the pollution created by automobile emissions happens in the first few minutes of operation, before pollution control devices can work effectively. Since "cold starts" create high levels of emissions, shorter car trips are more polluting on a per-mile basis than longer trips. When bicycling is substituted for short auto trips, 3.6 pounds of pollutants per mile are not emitted into the atmosphere. (League of American Bicyclists)
Here’s a checklist from the California Bicycle Coalition to get you ready for “Bike to Work Week”
I. Determine your route to work.
The route your drive to work may not be the same one to bike to work. First, choose roads that have wide outside lanes or paved shoulders. Second, drive the route during your normal commuting time to determine potential traffic problems. Third, bicycle the route on a weekend to examine the road surface for potential problem intersections and the approximate time it will take to make the trip.
II. Check out your bike.
Make sure your bicycle is in proper working order. Not only should all the mechanical parts be in good repair (e.g. brakes, tire, gears) but the bicycle should be adjusted properly for set height, handlebars, etc. If you do not have a helmet, borrow or buy one.
THE DAY BEFORE:
I. Dress for the Occasion.
Wear a helmet. It’s also a good idea to bike in comfortable cycling clothes; either pack a bag with your work clothes, or bring your attire the day before you cycle (so they won’t get wrinkled). Also make sure you have a place to change and freshen up, and keep a “kit” of toilet articles and a towel at work.
II. Pump Up.
Make sure your tires are properly inflated. If they are low, it will make riding more difficult.
THE DAY OF THE RIDE:
I. Don’t cycle on an empty stomach.
Your will need energy for your ride, so eat a good breakfast
II. Get an early start.
The first time you bike to work, allow yourself a little more time than you think you will need. If you tested the route on the weekend, you will know the approximate time it takes. But remember, rush hour traffic may slow you down.

Oak View Family Literacy Program - Family Game Night
The Family Literacy Program promoted TV Turnoff Week April 20 through 26 for literacy families, tutors, and staff to become aware of how much time they and their children are spending in front of a TV, computer, or playing electronic games. The program encouraged everyone to take the challenge to turn off the electronics and find other fun things to do – especially reading, going to the park, doing simple crafts, and more. To conclude the week, Family Literacy staff hosted a Family Game Night on Friday, April 24th at Oak View Branch Library. Families with children of all ages enjoyed games like Bingo, Trouble, Pictureka, Memory, Go Fish and Candyland while snacking on popcorn. Special thanks to literacy volunteers Tricia Lindquist and Erica Rodriguez who came to help.
The Library Fairy
The Library Fairy is a storyteller who performs multicultural folklore and storytelling programs for libraries, schools, and festivals in Los Angeles and around the world. Her enchanting programs promote literacy, diversity, and self-esteem in children. Stories are specifically gathered from rich, diverse cultures and corners of the world to share their folktales and traditions.
National Police Week and California Peace Officer Memorial Ceremonies
On October 1, 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a joint resolution of the 87th Congress of the United States to authorize the President to proclaim May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The calendar week during which May 15 falls is designated as Police Week in honor of the federal, state and local law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.
In 1976, a small group of peace officers felt the need to create a remembrance specifically for California peace officers. With the signing of California Senate Concurrent Resolution 94, the dream of memorializing the fallen peace officer came true. These peace officers then went to work raising funds and formulating ideas for a memorial. Their ideas became the memorial case, the leather-bound book of names, and the two hand crafted swords that symbolized the spartan warrior and the keeper of the peace.
For the ten years that followed, the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) Memorial Committee gathered the “police family” at the State Capitol to rededicate the memorial. This committee became the caretaker of the California memorial, taking great pains to insure that the names of the dead officers submitted by their respective departments were included in the memorial book, as well as the hearts of every Californian.
In 1985, Governor George Deukmejian called upon Senator Robert Presley to sponsor legislation establishing a monument memorializing the peace officers who died “in the line-of-duty.”
The establishment of a nine-member California Peace Officers’ Commission from this legislation developed into a new chapter in the memorial story.
The commission consisted of eight peace officers and a police widow: Richard Moore, Chief of Atherton P.D. and Phil Jordan, an officer with Vallejo P.D. were elected chairman and vice-chairman respectfully; Lt. George Aliano, Los Angeles Police Protective League, secretary; Bob Applegate, California Association of Highway Patrolmen, treasurer; other commissioners were Sgt. Jim Vogts, State Marshals Association; San Diego Sheriff John Duffy; Deputy Art Brown, Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriff’s; Mrs. Sammy Hoyt, widow of Lake County Deputy Sheriff and past PORAC president, Dave Hoyt; and Senior Officer Gil Coerper, Huntington Beach Police Officers’ Association.
Gil Coerper has continued with his public service, among many other duties, as a Councilmember for the City of Huntington Beach and Art Brown is a Councilmember for the City of Buena Park.
California Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremonies have been conducted in the State Capitol since 1977 during the week proceeding May 15. This year’s ceremony is on May 8, 2009. It is a ceremony that honors the 10 officers who have fallen in the line-of-duty in 2008, recognizing the sacrifice of those loved and left behind.
Cell Phone Tower Sites
In response to residents’ concerns regarding the proximity of wireless communication facilities to school sites, the City Council directed the Planning Department to review the process for approving wireless facilities. Per Council direction, Planning will prepare an amendment to the zoning ordinance to address the permitting and entitlement of such facilities proposed to be located within 500 feet of school sites by requiring a conditional use permit with a fully noticed public hearing. The amendment will be presented to the Planning Commission for a recommendation and subsequently to the City Council for final action in a few months.
May is Water Awareness Month
The month of May is Water Awareness Month in California. The California Water Awareness Campaign is a yearlong effort by organizations throughout California to heighten public awareness of water, and the role water agencies and allied entities play in conservation, management, water supply, water quality and distribution. The campaign focuses on the month of May each year with the observance of Water Awareness Month. The campaign also offers an opportunity to advise consumers about the role they can play in water conservation and in maintaining quality water supplies. Approximately 300 water agencies, farm bureaus, and various other organizations throughout California will participate in this year's campaign. With a growing population, it is important for all Californians to use our precious water resources as efficiently as possible. For three years in a row, California has experienced less than average rainfall in most of the state, making it more important for the public to be made aware of the importance of using water wisely.
