Charter Review Commission

The next meeting of the Charter Review Commission on November 3, will focus on Campaign Finance and Campaign Reform.  On November 17, the Commission will be reviewing Sections 200, 307, and 400-404 of the Charter.  These sections include a description of the City Administrator’s duties and powers, and the relationship between the City Council and the City Administrator.  At the December 1 meeting, the Commission will be taking testimony on Charter Section 612 (Measure “C”).  The November 17 meeting will be held in Room B-8 of City Hall and the December 1 meeting will be in the City Council Chambers.  Commission meetings begin at 6:00 PM.

Customer Service Tip of the Week – Use Your Pleasant Tone

Use hopeful and helpful words.  If you’re going to do something for your customer, then why not get “extra credit” by using words like, “I’d be happy to…” or “It would be my pleasure to…”- These hopeful and helpful words make the customer happy and make you look superb.

Youth Sports

The fall 2009 youth sports programs are about to conclude another successful season of flag football and coed indoor volleyball.  Saturday, November 7, the City Gym and Pool will be hosting the city-wide volleyball tournament beginning at 9:15 a.m. with the final game scheduled for 12:45 p.m.  Saturday, November 14, flag football playoffs and bowl games will kick off at Edison and Murdy Community Centers beginning at 9:00 a.m. at both locations.  The city-wide flag football championships are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. November 21 at Murdy Community Center.

Halloween Costume Contest at Bella Terra

The City of Huntington Beach Community Services Dept. and Bella Terra had its second Halloween Costume Contest on Saturday, October 31.  Participants enjoyed dressing up for the Costume Contest and Trick-or-Treating throughout the mall.  The 1st – 3rd place winners were given trophies and gift certificates from the merchants.  The winner of the 3 and under category was Nathaniel Wills.  The 4-6 year old winner was Cheryl Booze, and the 7 – 14 age winner was Trevor Allen-George.

Flu Shots and Autumn Health Fair Cancelled –Because the Health Care Agency of Orange County could not provide the vaccine, the health fair and the flu shot clinic originally scheduled at the Michael E. Rodgers Seniors Center for  November 12, 2009, has been cancelled.  A tentative date for flu shots only (no health fair) has been rescheduled for December 16, 2009, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the senior center.  Because the supply from the county is tentative, Senior Services is advising anyone interested in obtaining a flu shot to seek another source such as their personal physician.  Flu shot availability can also be found by zip code on the web through the Orange County Heath Care Agency at: www.ochealthinfo.com.  

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Positioning for Recovery Economic Conference

The Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce and the City of Huntington Beach Economic Development Department present the 23rd Annual Economic Conference Friday, December 11 at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort.   The conference is titled “Positioning for Recovery” and will include updates from the City, green strategies, how to access capital, and the importance of customer service.  Conference speakers include Economist, John Husing, Ph.D., and Wallace Walrod from the Orange County Business Council.  The price is $80 per person before December 4, 2009 and $95 per person after December 4.  To register, please contact the Chamber at 714.536.8888.

ProLiteracy Worldwide Awards National Accreditation to HB Library Literacy Volunteers

ProLiteracy Worldwide has announced the national accreditation of Literacy Volunteers-Huntington Beach Library.  Site reviewers visited HBPL for an all-day online accreditation site visit on September 29.   Literacy staff and board members prepared information on sixteen program management standards, including 175 attachments.  These were all uploaded to a WIKI page set up by the national organization.  With the help of library and city tech staff, the group met online with Carol Gabler of Wisconsin and Dave Whitaker of New York using WebEx technology, a computer camera, and a speaker phone.  Four student-tutor pairs spoke.  Library Director Stephanie Beverage, Library Board member Dionne Cox, four board members, and four literacy staff members participated.  This is the third accreditation for Literacy Volunteers-HBPL.  Since 1984, 5,278 Literacy Volunteers have helped more than 6,000 adult students improve their reading, writing and speaking skills at Huntington Beach Library.

New Databases at HBPL

The Library now offers remote access to Newsbank’s newspaper database and Ebsco’s magazine, journal, health, science, and history database. The databases are electronic resources that contain a wide range of well-known, authoritative articles, and books. We all know that there is a vast amount of “information” on the Web, but it can be hard to find reliable sources among all the misinformation, rumor, and advocacy one finds online. Popular search engines such as Google or Yahoo cannot retrieve the premium content (magazine and newspaper articles, reference books, television and radio broadcast transcripts, maps, photographs, pamphlets, etc.) that these resources offer. The library pays for access to these great resources, but library cardholders can obtain free access 24/7 through the library's website at www.hbpl.org.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

Jury Verdict on Fatal Collision

On August 29, 2007, at about 2:10pm, Jeffrey Wood was driving a red Ford F150 pickup truck eastbound on Indianapolis approaching the intersection of Everglades.  Jeffrey Woods, who was 19 years old at the time of this collision, swerved from the eastbound lanes, crossed the middle of the road and the west bound lanes and collided with 14 year old Danny Oates who was riding his bicycle.  The vehicle continued on, jumping the curb on to the sidewalk, hitting a palm tree and then through a cinderblock wall into a residents back yard.  The collision caused the death of Danny Oates.

The police investigation determined that Jeffrey Woods was intoxicated on prescription medications at the time of the collision.  The police investigation also determined he was texting on his cell phone at the time of the collision.

On November 2, 2009, a jury found Jeffrey Woods guilty of gross vehicular manslaughter and being under the influence of prescription medication.  He was taken into custody and will be sentenced on December 11, 2009.

Utilities Division Information Available on Facebook

The City of Huntington Beach’s Public Works Utilities Division recently joined Facebook through a Public Profile Page under the name Huntington Beach Water. On the new Facebook page, there are photo albums of water reservoirs, demonstration gardens with low water use plants, and events promoting water efficiency such as the Hurley US Open, Surfboards in the Sand, and Green Expo. There are also videos and links to interesting articles and websites. The notes are of a variety of topics such as “Sustainable Quotes,” “The Case for Tap Water,” “Join the Blue Revolution – Be Water Efficient” and “Storm Water Capture and Re-use Makes Perfect Sense.” 

The purpose of the Facebook page is to create a site people will find interesting, informative and inspirational. One of the most valuable features of Facebook and other social media is the direct, two way communication between an organization and their customers.  In the event of disaster, these social media sites could well be valuable as forums of communication from a public safety perspective.  Ultimately, the intent of the page is to create a virtual community where knowledge is shared, people are inspired and motivated to sustainable actions, and to educate people about water issues in an exciting and creative way.
