16 – City Council meeting to feature Flag Ceremony by Boy Scouts of America, all scouts participating in the Centennial Events will receive Centennial Patch, Presentation of the top three winners from each group of the elementary art contest “What would it be like to live in Huntington Beach 100 years ago?” and presentation of the top winners from each grade of the middle school essay contest and the teachers of the winning students presented with $50 to spend on their program. The topic of the student essay will be “What would it be like to live in Huntington Beach 100 years ago?” Click here for the entry forms for the two contests. Centennial Earth Month hike: Walk a moderately paced 7 mile hike with almost no gain in Huntington Beach as the city celebrates 'Earth Month". Meet 9 am at the picnic shelter near the café called "Breakfast in the Park" near the lake in Huntington Central Park. You can take the bus to the park or park your car at the corner of Lakeview Dr. and Central Park Dr. We will hike through an urban forest to the beach and over the bridge to the new ocean inlet to a rest stop. We should see a variety of shorebirds and ducks along with some upland species. Meet in the parking lot off Seapoint in Huntington Beach. The parking lot is between Pacific Coast Highway and Garfield on the west side of the street. If the parking lot is full, try to park on the street. Look for a group wearing binoculars and you will have found us! Bring binoculars and a scope if you have one.

- -Special Earth Day Celebration at Rainbow Disposal
Rainbow Disposal is hosting a FREE Earth Day Celebration on April 19, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at its newly modernized facility, located at 17121 Nichols Street (off Warner between Gothard and Beach Blvd.), in Huntington Beach. This FAMILY EVENT promises to be fun and educational with GAMES, PRIZES, food, big trucks, fuel efficient vehicle displays, and MORE!
The Earth Day Celebration will include:
- A Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event - Bring your old paint, pesticides, batteries, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, electronic waste, and more for safe disposal and/or recycling
- Free shred-while-you-watch event. There will be no per-person limit to the number of personal documents you can bring for shredding. In addition to paper documents, CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes can also be shredded, but because the process is done with different equipment, it is done off site. You won’t be able to watch the destruction of your CDs, DVDs or VHS tapes. Any questions about the shredding please call Caren Ferrera in the City Clerk’s office at 714/374-1559.
- Centennial Merchandise will be on sale at the Earth Day event. T-Shirts, sweatshirts, cups, decals and much more will be on sale at the Centennial Celebration booth.

The Huntington Beach Centennial month of June celebrates diversity in our community. A one-of-a-kind series of speakers has been designed to examine diversity through the first hand stories of people representing different ethnic, religious and lifestyle groups. The series is designed to show in part where we have been, where we are now and where we need to go in the next 100 years.

12 - The Huntington Beach Public Library System will be having a milestone birthday in June and is celebrating 100 years of service to the community! Ken Inouye, member of the Orange County Human Relations Commission, and other speakers will describe the Japanese experience in America especially with regards to relocation camps during
World War ll. We have invited Bruce Matsui, a Professor at Pomona College, who was the last baby born at Manzanar.
A film “The Ralph Lazo Story” will be shown. The film describes the circumstances of the only non-Japanese who was voluntarily imprisoned at Manzanar.

8 - Youth All-Star Games (Sports Complex)
In celebration of Sports Month the Huntington Beach Centennial Committee has announced that Youth Sports Day will be held at the Sports Complex adjacent to the Central Library on Saturday, August 8 from 9 a.m. to noon. The theme of the day is “Introducing Sports to Youth.”
There will be demonstrations of lacrosse, field hockey, volleyball, soccer and skateboarding. There will also be a demonstration softball game between 14 and under girls of the North and South Huntington Beach Fast Pitch Softball Leagues. In addition the batting cages will be available to youth free of charge.

25 - 26 – Golden Bear Reunion at the Hilton Waterfront
The shows will be held just blocks from the Bear’s original PCH location, at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort’s Grand Ballroom.
Starting August 12, information for purchasing tickets can be found at goldenbearreunion.com or by calling M. Shattuck at (714) 960-7904. Show prices range from $57.50 to $97.50 (higher-priced seats will include a retro dinner – choices include an original “Bear Burger” or appetizers). Purchasers will be limited to 6 tickets per order; a few “Sponsor Tables of 10 seats are also available. Part of the proceeds from the shows will go to benefit Sweet Relief, a Huntington Beach-based charity that aid career musicians with illness, disabilities or age-related problems.
All of the performers on the two nights have a history with the Golden Bear in the 60s and 70s. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band made the Bear their home base, and another regular, Steve Noonan (a special guest on Saturday), wrote the band’s first hit, “Buy for Me the Rain. Chris Hillman first performed there in the mid-60s, as a founding member of the Byrds (Hillman and Pederson also formed the Desert Rose Band, which received numerous CMA awards.
Honk possibly played the Golden Bear more than any other act, sometimes playing for owners, Carole and Rick Babiracki for 5 nights in a row. It was on the Bear’s stage that they honed their famed Five Summer Stories soundtrack. Guest performer Jack Tempchin, perhaps best known for penning the Eagles hits “Peaceful Easy Feeling” and “Already Gone,” was a member of another frequent Bear favorite, the Funky Kings. Legendary multi-instrumentalist, and Jackson Browne accompanist, David Lindley first performed at the Golden Bear in the folk era, and later regularly rocked the PCH venue with his band El Rayo X. Ray Manzarek first performed there as the trailblazing keyboardist with the Doors.
