The Property Unit provides for the proper collection, storage, security and disposition of evidence and other property, including items taken for safekeeping and found property.

With the exception of firearms and other property specifically regulated by statute, found property shall be held for a minimum of 90 days, and  safekeeping property shall be held for a minimum of 60 days.  The Huntington Beach Police Department is in the possession of the following FOUND items.  If you believe any of these items may belong to you, please call  the Property & Evidence Unit at (714) 536-5944, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., to identify your property.  You will need to provide proof of ownership to make a claim.  All unclaimed items will be sold at public auction, destroyed, converted to City use, or otherwise disposed of by law.  The Huntington Beach Police Department Property Unit uses www.propertyroom.com for all auction items.

Firearms

Firearms are released by appointment only.  All firearms, including long guns, must be registered in the name of the person taking possession.  Firearms will only be released with Detective approval.  Please bring government issued photo ID, a valid Law Enforcement Gun Release (LEGR) letter, and proof of ownership, if applicable, to the appointment.  Call 714-536-5944 to schedule your appointment.

Law Enforcement Gun Release Application (LEGR) - this form MUST be completed and submitted to the DOJ.  HBPD cannot release a firearm for any reason without the original LEGR approval letter with a DOJ seal.  This letter is valid for 30 calendar days.  If the firearm is not retrieved within the 30 days, a new LEGR application must be submitted to the DOJ.  This form can be obtained at https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/forms

Firearm Ownership Report - this form is used if the firearms are not registered in the name of the person retrieving the firearms.  All firearms, including long guns, must be registered prior to release.
