The City of Huntington Beach Community Services Department and the students at California State University Long Beach (CSULB), Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies are collaborating in a "grass roots" process to look at options for the undeveloped portion of Irby Park. This collaboration will be a great way to produce a viable concept for Irby park based upon community input, as well as a learning opportunity for students.
The students of CSULB REC 423, Facilities Design and Operations, are required to evaluate and assess the space, research and collect site information, perform community outreach and participate in professional presentation practices. As part of their class assignment, surveys have been mailed to residents residing within the housing tract bounded by Heil Avenue, Goldenwest Street, Warner Avenue and Edwards Street. The survey includes questions about the different aspects of Irby park, in which the students can gain an understanding of the desires for the project. while the survey is being conducted as a class project, the information may be utilized by the City, should consideration be given to purse development of Irby Park as through the formal park master plan process - which includes approval by the Community Services Commission and City Council.
